The WA Screen Academy, located on the ECU Mount Lawley campus, was established in 2005, and has since cemented its reputation as one of Australia’s most innovative and outstanding advanced-level education and training programs in screen production.
With the surge in screen technologies and the expanding screen production sector, there is a strong demand for people who can thoughtfully create high-quality, ethical screen stories in a range of formats in the screen industry.
The Screen Academy is a member of CILECT, the International Association of Film and Television Schools; one of only six member schools in Australia. This membership is an acknowledgment of the high quality of teaching and learning at the Academy, and enables international collaboration in both production and research.
From January 2025, WASA proudly becomes the WA Screen and Media Academy. The new Academy will offer a diverse and flexible suite of Bachelor, Graduate Certificate, Diploma and Master courses in Screen and Media. Postgraduate Screen Production courses will continue our collaboration with WAAPA actors, the Aboriginal Performance Group, composers, costume, design and sound students. From 2026, the Academy will be located at the City Campus and will provide a one-stop shop for screen and media education in WA.
The Screen Academy offers a production focused education and training experience designed to prepare graduates for the realities and challenges of working in the professional industry. The course enables students to develop practical skills and their own creative vision across a diverse range of screen productions including short scripted work, documentaries and cross cultural screen productions.
Students form production teams and work collaboratively on their projects using state-of-the-art facilities and equipment and collaborate with leading industry professionals as teachers and mentors. Graduates leave with industry-level skills, a diverse show-reel of production work, valuable industry connections and a strong analytical foundation relevant to working in the screen industry sector.
A unique feature of the program is the WA Screen Academy’s relationship with the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). WAAPA is a world-renowned training course for arts performers and technicians and WA Screen Academy films have helped in building successful careers for many well-known actors.
Screen Academy students collaborate with WAAPA actors on their short dramas and work with WAAPA composers, costume, design and sound students.
